Male spiders tend to back off really quickly if they realise the female they're after isn't interested, and this is partly due to females having anti-receptivity signals, and partly due to how a female spider will absolutely try to take a bite out of a guy harassing her.

Date: 2025-10-31 05:32 pm (UTC)My return fact is about huntsman/giant crab/wood spiders. They’re big and scary but harmless in comparison to the identical looking baboon spiders, which have an owie bite and no small amount of venom.
Specifically, a bunch of huntsman spiders have funny little walks. The wheel spider cartwheels and the Moroccan flic-flac spider handsprings around!!

Clem is a scientist, requiring logic and repetition and peer review, but it doesn’t stop her from hunching at the feeling she’s being watched.
It’s only a gut feeling, but she can’t afford to be caught in the scrapyard. She vaults over the mech she’s been scavenging and ducks, squinting through the torn-open remains of the mechanical torso into the gloom.
A translucent face stares back.
“I mean well!” The ghost says as Clem slaps a hand over her mouth to stifle a scream. “I’ll help you find the doohickey!”
Clem slowly lowers her hand.
“How about a plasma carburettor?”

Alien vines wind around the ruins of the spaceship, sprouting into all the small places you didn’t think existed. You’ve had plenty of time to map them all out, because you’re alone here, and you can’t wander too far away from the wreck.
This forest is no longer strange to you, so you recognise the sound of human footsteps immediately.
Don’t, you want to say. Stay away. Danger.
Come closer, you want to say. Talk to me. Please, see me.
In the end, you can do neither. You tell yourself that, whatever the consequence, it can’t possibly be your fault.

If in danger, it sheds a leg to distract the predator. The leg will continue to wiggle while the bunny harvestman hops away!
